Fitting Wider Wheels Empty Fitting Wider Wheels

Post by Johnny B Fri Feb 11, 2011 1:46 pm

Hey everyone

I became a NMOC member at the 2010 mini day in May. I past my test a couple of months ago and ive had my beloved Mini Tahiti for about 6 months now. My mini is in pretty respectable condition, and im doing what i can to keep it healthy, but im after some 6x12 alloys as im not too fond of my current 4.5x12's. My question is regarding where i can have my rear wheel arches cut. I am fully aware that since my mini is in original condition the rear arches need to be rolled if i want to fit 6x12's. Ive also got some new group 4 arches in mind, which i can have painted/installed myself.
Is there anywhere in the Norfolk region that anyone might recommend getting this done? I live between Aylsham and Cromer, but i dont mind driving across norfolk if it means the job will be done well!
Lastly is there anything else i need to do for fitting 6x12's?

Thanks!
Johnny B

Correct me if I'm wrong , but is is not the front arches that need adjusting . I run 6 x 12's and the front is where the clearance problems are .

Im not sure, i dont really know much about the process, except that modifications are required to fit 6x12's if your mini is standard. I looked around online and came to the conclusion that the rear arches where what needed attention.. but i may be wrong!

Please correct me if im wrong because id like to be told what needs to be done.

Its the front because the wheels move.

The rear arch will be fine, it's the front what needs to be cut, 'cos if they're both 12" wheels, there's no change in diameter. You'll just need to make the arches a bit wider to cover the 6x12's, I used W+P arches to cover mine.

welcome to the forum.

its the leading edge of the front arch that needs cutting. my old mini 30 needed about 1" removed.

have you thought about 5.5x12 deep dish alloys?? or even a 5x12 deep dish, which would give the look of a 6 with the possiblity of not cutting the arch. ( all minis seem to vary on clearance).

On the rear arches you dont need to do any work but to get the best ride hight and to stop rubbing on country lanes fit hi lows on the front i have 6x12 and got away with not having to cut the wings using adj syspension and adj tie bars with a poly bush kit however not all minis are the same and sometimes you will need to take a little bit of the front bottom of the wings but this will be covered by the arch. But if you go for 5.5 you still get a deep dish but with less hassel. We can have a chat at the quiz on sun and ill tell you more.

Thanks guys this is a massive help!

Yea i originally wanted to fit some 5.5x12 ultralights from minisport, but i spoke on the phone to a man at minispares and must have misunderstood what he was saying about wheel arch mods.

If im honest id rather fit 5.5x12's anyways as i really like the ultralight styling. And if its going to be less hassle thats even better. If my front wheel arches were to require work, is this the type of job a normal mechanic could do or should i be looking for a someone a little more specific? And mr t mentioned Hi-Lo suspension - would this be the same as minisport adjusta-ride?

Thanks guys, and sorry about all the questions, im just trying do things right the first time and avoid making errors because of my inexperience.

I used Wheel Revivers in Hoveton for the refurb on the Cooper wheels . He charged £25 per wheel plus VAT .

Ok thanks mr t ill keep that in mind! i hope to get my hands on some 5x12's or 5.5x12's in the next couple of months, and depending on the treatment required to my mini ill get in contact.

I think i might go down the 5x12 deepdish route, but thanks anyways Ian for letting me know about the old 5.5 ultralights!
And thanks guys for the all the information its been a big help, ill stay in contact and no doubt ill have another question soon enough to discuss on the forum.

And ill try and make it to a meeting one of these days and meet everyone!

Johnny
