GEARBOX Empty GEARBOX

Post by Brendan Fri Aug 27, 2010 1:49 pm

After spending all Saturday cleaning my car and getting it all nice and shiny (inside and out), I drove it about 200yards only to hear a nasty crunch followed by a horrible rattle whilst trying to put it into 2nd. Result; gearbox = dead.

Bummer.

If anyone has a decent full gearbox (for a 1990 cooper with all four gears) or knows of where I could pick one up, that would be awesome. I've tried Jack Daine (Whiffler Rd), DSN and Mini Farm already but no joy.

Looks like I'm going to have to send my original box off to be reconditioned though, as I'm not getting many results back from my enquiries.

And it looks like I may have to start selling my limbs as the prices I'm getting back are suprisingly epic... Anyone for a new left arm? One careful owner only £2000+vat.

Cheers all!

Brendan J

Never thought of AJs thanks Craig. I will give them a shout of the bank holiday. And yeah it is a 1275cc... Well spotted mr t.

Look forward to hearing what your bro's got to say on the matter bry4ns, I will check back soon.

In the meantime, looks like I'm going to have to walk to the shops to get the food in again for tonight. I've never walked so much, or got rained on as much in a good few years!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the boxes on all the A+ engines are interchangable.

im sure gearing is different to cope with the higher BHP i no for a fact that the diff on a 1000 is not strong enough and you lose bhp

Breadon Ajs will strip it down but sends the gearbox away for repair
minifarm will rebuild your gearbox on site
Not long ago i had my brothers rebuilt there but he just did the rebuild
you will have to break the costs down
1. gearbox has to be stripped from engine removing clutch
2. gearbox rebuild
3. full gasket set,new oil and filter
4. re fit gearbox,clutch and casing,bleed clutch
I no the costs are high but if the clutch is coming out its always worth fitting a naw clutch if its old otherwise you will be paying labour at a later stage.
clutch is about £70

The gearing is the same on the 1000 compared with the 1275,

however depending on the year the diff ratio would be different.....
I had a uprated diff in my green one!!!!!
(thats why it went fairly well)

I think from 1984 to 1992 all Mini's had a 3.15 to 1 final drive.

I put a 1000 gearbox and diff on a 1275 years ago and the power was crap so if the gearbox is the same the diffs must be different ?
