im currently working on a spi cooper it has a problem where it idles to fast. On start up it revs hard then settles but is a idling about normal if you leave it to tick over it idles about 1100 when warm but if you touch the throttle it goes up to about 1800-2000 then drops to about 1300 rpm i looked under the bonnet and its the stepper motor that seems to be upping the revs ive searched this online and seems to be so many problems people have had with various bits i was just wondering if anyone has any idea whats causing this thanks Dan.

Are all the vacuum tubes in good order, especially the ends?

My mpi revs a good un at start up. I just switch it off and then back on again. 9 times out of 10 it clears it.

Could be the throttle body has warped (there only plastic).

i checked the little rubber elbows on the vacuum pipes last night i will check the actual pipes tonight thanks.
The reason its revving is because the stepper motor plunger/rod is upping the revs it comes out when you rev the car even up to temperature i understand this should do this when cold but not hot i didnt know if this could be faulty or the manifold temp sensor is not telling the ecu/mems when its warm or its as a result of another fault and the ecu/mems is trying to correct it.
im not big on these electronics to be honest im more S.U than ECU so any information is very apreciated thank you ..

It might just be an SPI issue, mine idles really low (and sometimes dies) but when you've driven it, it idles quite high.. It got to the point when it idled at 3500 rpm on the way to Stanford Hall last year.

I have a similar problem on my mpi - I've been told it may be the accelerator potentiometer?
