My Computer Empty My Computer

Post by Ian Nicholls Thu Oct 14, 2010 9:03 pm

I thought of creating a thread in which we could recommend computer programmes for normal day to day operating. I'll start with wot I have.

I've got the free edition of AVG

Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html

Lavasoft Ad Aware anti spyware

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

C cleaner - deletes unwanted files instantly

http://www.piriform.com/

Also I have installed in my e-mail contacts the below false address

AAAAAAA@AAA.AAA

It is apparently designed to stop my contacts being hacked.

Good idea Ian, as most of you know, I'm a bit of a geek and know quite a bit about computers so if anyone ever needs advice/help, just shout!

I too use AVG but I liked it so much I bought the paid-for version as it not only does the anti-virus thing but it also has a good firewall, email scanner, website scanner, phishing warner and lots more.

Spybot and AdAware - I don't use them as AVG covers that, but before I used the full AVG I used them and they're very good.

CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) does what it says on the tin, very good it is too.

However, the AAA@AAA.AA thing is a hoax/myth I'm afraid. Google is your friend

Firefox is an excellent alternative to Windows Internet Explorer. It's much better than IE when it comes to security.

If you want a media player that will play ANYTHING, check out VLC Player. It will play any video file, dvds, any music file, cds...

And if you ever want to download a video from YouTube, (not that you'd do such an act that infringes copywrite), you could use YouTube Downloader

As much as i love laptops i hate them at the same time
i have 2 broken ones chargers packing up is the main problem i have
one with a cracked screen and broken charging point
one with a dodgy screen and caput charger
price of repair was so much that we now bought a cheap netbook which we treat like gold lol.
the last shop that repaired one laptop charged £90 for it only to pack up 4 months later i was so angry with him wanting more money out of me that i had to leave the shop before i smacked him one.

Hi Guys, just started up a computer business (aimed at local businesses) hence why i've been quiet recently....

I'd add Microsoft Security Essentials as a good AV - used to use AVG but SS seems quicker and is still free!!
