Hi Molly, emulsion under the oil cap means water is getting into the oil somewhere (Oil + Water = emulsion, just like the paint).

The water could be getting into the oil from a number of places, it could be one of the many gaskets in the engine that's cracked or if you're really unlucky, the engine block itself may have cracked, but that's very rare.

So to fix it I'd check your gaskets first. Checking the head gasket will mean taking the head off the engine which is not a quick task and putting it back on requires all the bolts to be done up in a very specific order, to very specific torques. So maybe a job for a mechanic if you're not too confident in doing it yourself.

Someone else on here might have some other ideas though....

sounds like stages of your head gasket going.Do you keep your car in a garage because sometimes its a build up of condensation. Are you losing water or oil and is your temp gauge going up high ??

In that case its probably the head gasket... (not a major job)

If you pull the dipstick out is the white stuff on there as well??
and also is it using water???
